Using Labaro

The sidebar

What the icons, badges and dots in the sidebar mean, and how to rearrange them.

Icons

Each service shows its own icon, or a letter if it doesn’t have one. Slack shows your workspace’s icon once Labaro has found it. The service on screen is highlighted in blue. Point at an icon to see the service’s name beside it.

Badges and dots

What you see What it means
A red number Messages that need you, such as direct messages, mentions, or mail in Gmail’s Primary tab. Over 99 shows as 99+.
A red dot Something needs you, but the service doesn’t say how many.
A green dot Only things that can wait, such as mail in Gmail’s other tabs, or a Slack channel that doesn’t mention you.
A dot on Labaro’s Dock icon At least one service has something that needs you.

Only some services tell Labaro what can wait: Gmail, Slack, X, Instagram and LinkedIn. For the rest, everything unread counts as needing you, so they only ever show red.

If a service’s green dot isn’t useful to you, turn it off with Ignore unimportant messages in the service’s Edit window.

No dot on the Dock icon? Check that macOS lets Labaro badge its icon. It’s in System Settings → Notifications → Labaro.

Asleep, being checked, or turned off

What you see What it means
A dimmed icon with a moon The service is asleep, to give its memory back. Click it to wake it. Its badge stays.
Arrows going round instead of the moon Labaro is checking the sleeping service for new messages.
A greyed-out tile The service is disabled. Clicking it does nothing until you enable it again.

Sleep and memory explains when services sleep and how they’re checked.

The memory figure

The figure above the + shows how much memory Labaro and all its services are using, measured the way Activity Monitor measures it. It updates every 5 seconds. It turns red when Labaro is using more than the limit you’ve set in Settings. For a breakdown by service, open Debug → Tasks, described in Tasks, Logs and Console.

Rearrange your services

Drag an icon up or down to move it. Labaro keeps the order, and ⌘1 to ⌘9 and the Services menu follow it.

When you have more services than fit, arrows appear at the top or bottom of the icons:

  • Click an arrow to scroll a screenful.
  • While dragging an icon, hold it over an arrow to scroll.
  • Switching to a service that’s out of view scrolls it into view.

The right-click menu

Right-click an icon for these:

Item What it does
Disable / Enable Disable stops the service and gives back its memory. It keeps its settings and sign-in. You can’t disable your last enabled service this way. Use Services → Disable All for that.
Reload Reloads the service’s page. It isn’t available while the service is asleep or disabled.
Dark mode / Light mode Switches this service to dark or light, whichever it isn’t showing. Only pages with a dark theme of their own change.
Edit… Opens the service’s settings. See Service settings.
Delete… Removes the service, after asking. See Service settings.

Services → Enable All and Disable All do the same for every service at once. Services stay disabled after Labaro restarts.
